UFOs In Art and History

Holy Mary and the UFO
Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus and Saint John

In Palazzo Vecchio, in Florence, there are many paintings. One of them, in particular, holds a great mistery. It is the painting of the worshiping Virgin Mary with Baby and young Saint John, attributed to Filippo Lippi (15th century), or maybe to Sebastiano Mainardi or to Jacopo del Sellaio. On the right side, on the top part of the painting, it is possible to notice a particular which at first sight might just seem some spot or stain. This is not what it is though.  It is understandable also because of a man pictured just underneath, who is staring at the strange object in the sky. That which could be a stain looks indeed very close to a UFO! At the man's feet there's a dog barking, as if it saw something that disturbed him.

If we take a look closely at the object in question which is represented on the canvas, we can notice that it emanates a light of its own. Moreover, it's got a distinctive shape, and appears to be a metallic object shaped like a disk. It is not however the first time that objects which have nothing got to do with the main theme is represented on a canvas. In past times, this was the only way for a painter to immortalize something he saw and that he wanted to be remembered in the years to come, even for centuries. It is the message of a man who lived more than 500 years ago directed to the posterity.

Carlo Crivelli's Annunciation

This not very famous image is the Annunciation by Carlo Crivelli (1430/ 1494), clearly of humanistic style; a painting which is hard to find both on history of art's books and in art galleries. We can easily notice how something of a circular shape in the sky is emanating a beam that falls directly on the Virgin Mary in prayer. If we approach the object in question, we can see how in the lower part of the object there is some sort of halo of spots painted with a little hue of brown; moreover we can see another circle, not well defined, of an intense yellow colour, where the beam is coming out from, together with a luminous trail encasing it. It is a very suggestive and enigmatic image, whose explaination lies in the depths of the painter's conscience, who probably saw that mysterious object and mistook it for a divine sign, deciding to immortalize it in one of his paintings, straight out of a religious theme.
